The newly available data indicate that the long duration C2.4 flare peaking at 06:40 UT on February 9 was associated with a partial halo CME. The CME was directed northward and appeared first time in the SOHO/LASCO C2 field of view at 06:48 UT. The width of the CME was 150
degrees and its speed was about 600 km/s. Due to the position of the CME source region, close to the central meridian, it is possible that this CME will arrive at the Earth on February 12, producing unsettled to active geomagnetic conditions.

 

UPDATE

EARTH-DIRECTED ERUPTION: On Saturday, February 9th, around 0640 UT, a magnetic filament in the sun's northern hemisphere erupted, hurling a coronal mass ejection (CME) toward Earth. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the UV flash from the underlying C2-class solar flare:



The CME, which was captured in flight by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, billowed away from the sun at 800 km/s. The bulk of the cloud looks like it will sail north of Earth. Nevertheless, a glancing blow is possible as shown in this 3D model of the CME prepared by analysts at the Goddard Space Flight Center. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras on Feb. 12th when the CME passes by.

FILAMENT ERUPTION: Solar activity is low, but not zero. During the early hours of Feb. 13th, a magnetic filament erupted near the sun's SW limb. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the blast (click to set the scene in motion):



The extreme UV movie shows the filament flinging itself into space followed by the formation of a "canyon of fire" marking the channel formerly occupied by the filament. The glowing walls of the canyon are formed in a process closely related to that of arcade loops, which appear after many solar flares.

As erupting magnetic filaments often do, this one launched a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. NASA's STEREO-A spacecraft spotted the expanding cloud, which does not appear to be heading for Earth or any other planet.

The needles on his chart recorder were swinging wildly:




"Overhead we saw some fantastic auroras," he adds.

The storm was caused by a region of south-pointing magnetism in the solar wind that wafted past Earth during the early hours of Feb. 14th. The solar wind's south-pointing magnetic field partially canceled Earth's north-pointing magnetic field, opening a crack in our planet's magnetosphere. Solar wind poured in to fuel the storm.

Possible Seismic Activity on Asteroid 2012 DA14

Feb. 14, 2013: For eons, Earth has felt the tremors of asteroids striking our planet. From the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago to the felled forests around Tunguska in 1908, the space rocks keep coming.

This week, Earth strikes back. When asteroid 2012 DA14 makes a record close approach to our planet on Feb. 15th, the space rock could be the one feeling tremors.
New research by Richard Binzel, a professor of planetary science at MIT, suggests that many near-Earth asteroids experience a seismic jolt when they pass too close to our planet’s gravitational field.

"We are going to be looking closely for evidence of seismic activity on 2012 DA14 as it passes by," says Binzel. "This is the first case of an object coming close enough to experience quakes AND where we have enough notice to plan observations."

Binzel first began to entertain the idea of asteroid-quakes a few years ago when he was pondering a mystery about near-Earth asteroids:

"As asteroids move through space, they slowly turn dark-red. This phenomenon, called 'space weathering', is caused by long exposure to cosmic rays and solar radiation. For decades, however, we have known about a handful of small asteroids that looked [light and fresh]; they were not space weathered."

How did this group of space rocks avoid space weathering? To solve the mystery, Binzel and colleagues calculated the asteroids' orbits and found a telling clue: They all had very close encounters with Earth in the past million years.

"We believe they were 'shaken up' by their encounters with Earth," he says. "Gravitational forces during the flybys can stretch, rattle, and torque these asteroids, causing dark, space-weathered material on the surface to be overturned, revealing the fresh stuff underneath."

There is no Richter Scale for asteroids. Instead, Binzel expresses the force of the quakes in units of gravitational acceleration, or gees. 1 g = the acceleration due to gravity on Earth's surface. "These asteroids experience [seismic activity] in the milli- to micro-g range," he says. "That might not sound like much, but remember these are small bodies. Gravity is not very strong, so just a little shaking or stretching goes a long way."

NASA's 70-meter diameter Goldstone radar will be observing 2012 DA14. [more]

Binzel imagines what an astronaut floating alongside such an asteroid might see: "The surface could slowly sway or rock by a few centimeters. Other things to look for would be puffs of asteroid-dust rising from the surface and gentle avalanches on the steepest slopes of craters." In rare cases, "rubble pile" asteroids might break apart during the encounter and then re-form as Earth recedes into the distance.

On February 15th, 2012 DA14 will thread the gap between Earth and the belt of geosynchronous satellites that orbits our planet. At closest approach, the 50-meter space rock will be just 17,200 miles above Earth's surface, a prime target for radars and telescopes.

MIT postdoc Nick Moskovitz, who works with Binzel, is coordinating observations with worldwide observatories to pin down the color, spin, shape, and reflectivity of the asteroid as it passes by. Changes in any of these quantities might be a sign of a quake. Participating telescopes include La Palma in the Canary Islands, the Siding Spring and Perth observatories in Australia, Mt John in New Zealand, Mt Canopus in Tasmania, WISE in Israel, and the Clay Center Massachusetts.

Also, NASA's Goldstone radar will be pinging 2012 DA14. The radar data can be used to create 3D movies showing the space rock from all sides. Goldstone might be the first to capture an asteroid-quake in action.

"We stand to learn a lot from the observations," says Binzel.

Description:
Russian officials say a meteorite has fallen in the Chelyabinsk region some 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) east of Moscow. A spokesman for the Russian Interior Ministry, Vadim Kolesnikov, said the Friday morning fall caused a blast that broke windows. There were no immediate confirmed reports of injuries, but Russian news agencies cited unnamed sources as saying several people were injured at a school in a thinly populated part of the region, which is on the eastern edge of the Ural Mountains.

Russia has been hit by what officials are describing as 'meteorite rain'. Reuters reported that a powerful blast rocked the Urals region with bright objects falling from the sky. "It was definitely not a plane," an emergency official told Reuters, without elaborating. "We are gathering the bits of information and have no data on the casualties so far." An emergency official told RIA-Novosti that no one was hurt in a meteor shower. Local residents said they witnessed burning objects in the sky of the Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk regions. "Preliminary indications are that it was a meteorite rain," an emergency official told RIA-Novosti. "We have information about a blast at 10,000-metre altitude. It is being verified." A witness in Chelyabinsk reported hearing a huge blast early in the morning and feeling a shockwave in a 19-storey building in the town centre. The sounds of car alarms and breaking windows could be heard in the area, the witness said, and mobile phones were working intermittently.
